My Neighborhood is History: Afro-Caribbean neighborhood memories in Bastidas, Pescaíto, and Cristo Rey
Identifies, reconstructs, and maps neighborhood and popular memories in Afro-Caribbean sectors of Santa Marta, proposing a critical reading of urban history from neighborhoods systematically ignored.
Why this project
Bastidas, Pescaíto, and Cristo Rey are foundational neighborhoods of Afro-Caribbean Santa Marta. Their memories, however, have been systematically ignored by official narratives about the city. This project proposes a critical reading of urban history from below: from the bodies, the houses, the corners, the kitchens, and the plazas where neighborhood life is sustained.
Objectives
- Identify and map sites of memory significant to the communities of the three neighborhoods
- Reconstruct neighborhood trajectories from oral testimonies and family archives
- Produce materials for community return: maps, zines, exhibitions
- Link neighborhood memories to contemporary Afro-Colombian struggles
